Day 1, The not so glorious start to our expedition

Saturday, 29th October

We’ve had an early morning start to make an appearance on BBC radio Cumbria where we talk about why we took on this challenge, and the difficulties involved in crossing the dangerous ridge line between Annapurna IV and II. Catch the interview here. (at 1:47:15).

There’s also a great interview on ITV Border, at 6pm, Monday 31 Oct, where I talk through my preparations and what kit you need for the mountain.

Setting off

It doesn’t matter how much time or notice you have you never are as prepared as you want to be for a big expedition.

Today’s the day to fly – that’s after 9 months of serious preparation and an even longer period of thinking and dreaming about this big challenge.

After meticulous planning and half a dozen phone calls to the airline prior to our arrival into Manchester airport we were kindly reminded that expeditions are never perfect. Our original online quote was not valid as it was not the same airline all the way to KTM. The result, even after lengthy negotiation and avoidance tactics were a threatening charge of £2990 for overweight baggage!

After a painful hour of triage and justification of every pair of pants and socks we managed to loose 40kgs. Mainly snacks and general luxuries.

Eagerly awaiting the simplicity of Base Camp and the mountains!
