What is an International Mountain Leader?

An International Mountain Leader (IML) is a person who has been trained and assessed over a number of years against the challenging requirements set out by the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA).

The IML qualification qualifies the holder to lead groups in mountain ranges all over the world, including high altitude treks and expeditions, summer and winter.

Only a qualified International Mountain Leader has the badge and the carnet of The UIMLA organisation.

In the UK the IML holders are represented by the British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML).

What it means for you

Exped Adventure’s approach of using only the right person for the job for our treks and expeditions ensures that you are led by the very best in the industry who possess the highest safety standards and environmental awareness.

Our guides have total responsibility for all decisions taken on the mountain, to ensure your safety at all times.

Keeping skills current

IML’s, from every member country, have to maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure that members are kept up-to-date with the latest developments in mountain leadership.

The British Association of International Mountain Leaders is a professional body for British IMLs, there is a scheme of continuing professional development (CPD) which ensures IMLs’ skills are up to speed.
